"The White Rose"
Directed by Michael Verhoeven
The tragic yet heroic tale of the "White Rose," a
group of Munich students who distributed anti-Hitler literature in an
attempt to inspire an uprising against the fascist leadership. Lena Stolze
plays White Rose member Sophie Scholl, a role she also brought to life in
Percy Adlon's The Last Five Days. Director Michael Verhoeven raised
the ire of the German government with this film, due to an epilogue that
pointed out the shameful fact that the legal condemnation of the White Rose
members had never been rescinded. Initially the controversy led to a
temporary ban on the film being shown abroad, but public outcry eventually
forced the government to officially denounce the procedure that sentenced
the brave rebels to death. German with English subtitles. West Germany.
