"Herdsmen of the Sun"
1988
Directed by Werner Herzog
Herzog's fascination
with the natural world at its most enduringly strange led him to the southern Sahara for Herdsmen
of the Sun, "a startling anthropological documentary about the nomadic members of
the Wodaabe Tribe" (Janet Maslin). Spectacular tribal courtship rituals are
captured on film, as once a year, the men decorate themselves with beads and blue lipstick
and festive hats to participate in what amounts to a beauty pageant. French, English and
Peul with English subtitles. 52 minutes. |
