"The Farewell"
2000
Directed by Jan Schutte
A dark,
moody examination of playwright Bertolt Brecht (Josef Bierbichler) and his
inner circle of friends on the final day of their 1956 summer vacation in
Brecht's East German country house. Director Jan Schutte looks at the lovers
in Brecht's life (who comprise most of the cottage's guest list) and the
deep love and hate he inspired in them, against the backdrop of the Stasi's
plan to arrest one of Brecht's guests, political dissent Wolfgang Harich.
German with English subtitles.
