"Blum Affair"
1948
Directed by Erich Engel
An important postwar
German film, directed by Erich Engel. On the surface a fast-paced exciting thriller, the
film reveals the whole horrible relation of fascism, business and anti-Semitism in Germany
of the late 20's. An unemployed man kills an accountant for money. He is caught, brought
to a police inspector who, it turns out, served in the same Freikorps regiment--the
murdered man worked for Blum, a Jewish industrialist, who perhaps knew something of tax
fraud at the company. The case becomes a right versus left political drama. With Hans
Christian Blech, Gisela Trowe, Kurt Ehrhardt. Includes institutional and
public performance rights. German with English subtitles.
105 minutes. |
