"Visits: Hungry Ghost Anthology"
2004
Directed by Low Ngai Yuen, James Lee, Ng Tian Hann, and Yuhang Ho
Four young Malaysian directors pool their talents for
this "admirably philosophical" (Indiewire) horror anthology set
during the Chinese Hungry Ghosts Festival in cosmopolitan Kuala Lumpur. Low
Ngai Yuen's "1413" is a tale of teenage suicide gone awry. In "Waiting for
Them," James Lee (The
Beautiful Washing Machine) follows the misadventures of two friends
who let a bona fide ghost come between them. "Nodding Scoop" by Ng Tian Hann
concerns a filmmaker who shoots a bizarre ritual in which the participants
call forth a spirit with knowledge of the future. Lastly, "Anybody Home" by
Yuhang Ho is a story of deadly obsession. Cantonese and Malaysian with
English subtitles. 110 minutes. |
