RAN
Japan/France - 1985
Directed by Akira Kurosawa

Visually, this is one of the most spectacular films that we have ever seen, period.  The costumes and sets alone make watching every minute of footage well worth the time, but the film doesn't depend on them to deliver the impact of the intensely human drama that is portrayed through this re-telling of Shakespeare's King Lear.

An aging warlord divides his empire between his three sons in this epic tale of greed turning brother against brother and an old man realizing, too late, the err of his ways.   Lord Hidetora, the aging warlord, is played to perfection by Tatsuya Nakadai.

There are many brilliant directors, but we can think of none who approach Akira Kurosawa's absolute mastery of his craft.  And more than showing us brief glimpses of genius, Kurosawa does his job.  He delivers.  He does his homework.  When he presents a battle scene, he delves into the strategy behind it and connects the viewer in such a way that we are able to understand the battle.  He clearly considers his audience to be intelligent and his films are enhanced by that respect.

Ran won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1985), and was nominated for a Golden Globe in that category (1986).   Akira Kurosawa was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director (1986) for Ran, which also received Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration.  The Oscar was awarded to Emi Wada for Best Costume Design (1986).

Runtime:  160 Minutes

"A truly great movie - a fascinating interpretation of MacBeth, set in the medeavial Japan of the Samurai. The costumes and sets are historically very accurate - see the books by Stephen Turnbull. The movie is beautiful to view, fast and pacy, visually and intellectually a feast - if you have yet to see this film I envy you your first viewing!"

"The amount of directors that attempt to paraphrase the works of Shakespeare are too numerous to count, this adaptation counts above all the others. Kurosawa has taken a classic story of familial strife and retold it with a fresh perspective of the generational gap between the understanding of human nature that both Saburo (the youngest of Hidetora's sons) and his father possess. The love of a son for his father, the beauty of the battles, the treachery and the lust, all of these combine to form one of the most intriguing films made in my lifetime. Thanks to Akira Kurosawa, R.I.P."
