"Dancehall Queen"
1997
Directed by Rick Elgood/Don Letts
This modern-day
Cinderella story is the largest grossing Jamaican film ever. Marcia, a
single mother, toils the streets of the Kingston ghetto by day as a street
vendor; by night, she's the "mystery lady," the new star of the Kingston
dancehall. If she can win the dancehall contest, the prize money, and more
importantly, her own sense of worth, she will be free of lowlife Larry (who
pretends to help her but is actually after her eldest daughter), the
murderous thug Priest, and the ghetto itself. 95 minutes. |
