"13 Tzameti"
2005
Directed by Gela Babluani
With the festival success of this slick
black-and-white crime thriller, writer-director Gela Babluani has become the
Georgian filmmaker to watch. 13 Tzameti tensely tracks Sebastien
(Georges Babluani), a poor twenty something immigrant from the steppes, who
overhears his French neighbors talking about a package that will bring them
riches. Intercepting the parcel, Sebastien's life is thrown into utter chaos
as he follows cryptic clues that lead him to a world of depraved gambling,
where millions are won and lives are lost. "Playfully wicked. As a brutal
metaphor for the global economy, 13 Tzameti takes care of business" (Village
Voice). Winner at Sundance, the European Film Awards, and the Venice
Film Festival. French with English subtitles. 90 minutes. |
