"Private Confessions"
1996
Directed by Liv Ullmann
With a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman, Private
Confessions is the continuation of Best Intentions exploring
Bergman's childhood memory of his parent's turbulent marriage. Anna
and Henrik are again played by Pernilla August and Samuel Froler.
Structured around five conversations shown out of chronological sequence, Private
Confessions is about the isolation and loneliness felt by Anna, the
wife of an unfeeling Lutheran minister. The manner of her
confessions and the conversations that continue to unfold revisit a major
Bergman theme: the frustration and futility of a passionate soul unable to
escape, or even reconcile, the strict moral framework in which it lives. Swedish with English subtitles. 127 minutes. |
