"The Best Intentions"
1992
Directed by Bille August

Ingmar Bergman wrote the  screenplay for this account of the early life of his parents.   A wealthy young woman falls in love with a young clergyman of lesser means.   Her family strongly objects to their union and manage to keep them apart for some time.  When she can no longer tolerate life without her lover, she marries him and joins him in his new parish, a bleak and isolated place that she cannot adjust to. Bille August won the Golden Palm from the Cannes Film Festival for directing The Best Intentions.  Pernilla August (who married director, Bille August during the making of this film) won Best Actress awards from both Cannes (1992) and the Guldbagge Awards (1993).  Ingmar Bergman won the award for Best Screenplay from the Guldbagge Awards (1993).
Swedish with English subtitles.
182 minutes.
