"The Best Intentions"

Directed by Bille August
Ingmar Bergman wrote the screenplay for this account
of the early life of his parents. A wealthy young woman falls in love with a
young clergyman of lesser means. Her family strongly objects to their union
and manage to keep them apart for some time. When she can no longer tolerate life
without her lover, she marries him and joins him in his new parish, a bleak and isolated
place that she cannot adjust to. Bille August won the Golden Palm from the Cannes Film
Festival for directing The Best Intentions. Pernilla August (who married
director, Bille August during the making of this film) won Best Actress awards from both
Cannes (1992) and the Guldbagge Awards (1993). Ingmar Bergman won the award for Best
Screenplay from the Guldbagge Awards (1993).
Swedish with English subtitles. 182 minutes.
