The obsessively competitive world of championship ballroom dancing is presented
in this hilarious film about
a young man's quest to win the "Pan Pacific Grand Prix
Championship". Groomed from the age of six by his mother (played delightfully
"over-the-top" by Pat Thompson), Scott Hastings loves the dance but feels
increasingly restricted by the strict ruling force that is the ADF (Australian Dance
Federation). He longs to create his own steps and express himself through dance, the
only medium he knows, but is roundly criticized by everyone for deviating from the rules
of this bizarre little world. He loses his long-time partner (we thought she looked
like a tiny version of "Bob's Big Boy") and finds himself preparing for the most
important competition of his life with a new, clumsy, plain-jane partner. Who cares
if we can all see that a transformation of Pygmalion proportions is imminent? It's
such fun to check out the make-up and costumes!
We are surprised that this film did not receive more acclaim, although it was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1994. We consider this film to be a "must see" for drag queens of all sexes!

:)","Watching Strictly Ballroom for me was like falling in love. I felt a
tremendous sense of renewal. The first time I saw it I was ten years old and taking Jazz
Dancing at the local Dance Studio. This film taught me that a life lived in fear
really is a life half lived. I could really relate to Fran because

"When I heard the reviews of this movie in the SF Chronical, I had to see it...But i
missed the first showing...on my way to Australia, I got to see it to my surprise...it was
a red eye flight, but i stayed up late to see it...when it ended, i wanted to dance in the
aisles..for the ones who stayed up, I saw all there smiles....I loved that movie...I even
took ballroom dance lessons...My girlfriend liked it because she said I looked like the

"This movie was and still is the best movie I have ever seen. I never knew about it til this year when my English teacher showed it in her class. For some reason I can really relate to it..I don't know why. There is no one that'll watch this movie that won't be in a good mood when it's over.
