"Lazarillo"
1959
Directed by Cesar Ardavin
Based on an anonymous
novel from the 16th century. A classic tale about a fatherless boy who is abandoned by his
mother, leaving him struggling to survive at whatever work he can find. His strange
succession of employers each have a different lesson to teach him. A blind beggar, a
miserly sacristan, a fake nobleman and even a traveling band of performers all add to his
understanding of vanity, cunning, deception and, ultimately, survival. Lazarillo
won the Golden Bear from the Berlin International Film Festival (1960).
