Set during the Spanish Inquisition, Extramuros is a fascinating, dark story of love and ambition behind a convent's walls. Sister Angela decides to fake stigmata in order to save the convent from ruin and her devoted lover reluctantly agrees to help. But Angela's scam brings her unexpected fame as well as new enemies who could destroy her relationship. Extramuros is a strange, serious and passionate work, with the same femmes-against-fascism theme as Mädchen in Uniform, and an amazingly intense performance by star Carmen Maura. Best of all, Extramuros isn't coy about its key characters' sexuality.  Mercedes Sampietro won the "Prize San Sebastian" for Best Actress at the San Sebastian International Film Festival for her performance in Extramuros.
