"Belle Epoque"
1992
Directed by Fernando Trueba
This film is really about the choices we make, and the repercussions
that follow. A deserter from the Nationalist Army during the Spanish Civil War
of the 1930's is smitten by the four beautiful daughters of an eccentric artist that he
has befriended. He falls in love with each of them but must eventually choose.
Delightfully photographed on location in Portugal, there are several interesting sub-plots
to amuse oneself with. The relationship between the artist and his opera singer wife
is especially fun, when she returns home with her manager/lover for a family visit between
concert tours. Belle Epoque won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film
(1994), while virtually sweeping the Goya Awards (Spain's Academy Awards) in 1993.
