Directed by Boris Barnet
An ambitious film about
divided loyalties in a small Russian town during World War I. The film
blends comic, ironic and tragic elements to portray the eccentric
inhabitants of the town, with performances full of spontaneity. Yelena
Kuzmina stars in a comic role with Nikolai Bogolyubov and Nikolai Kryuchkov.
"There is something of Chekhov's plays…the concealed and repressed
emotions of its characters, the pauses and hints, the circumstances and
atmosphere of events, the combination of comic and dramatic elements, all
building a profound inner rhythm" (O. Borisov). Russian and German
with English subtitles. 82 minutes.
