A masterpiece. The last silent film by Dovzhenko is a lyrical evocation of his native Ukraine, the theme of the life cycle of man developed through constant juxtaposition and intertwining of images of life and death. The film charts the conflict between peasants and a landowner in a film poem of inestimable beauty.
