"Adam's Rib"
1990
Directed by Vyacheslav Kristofovich
A post-Soviet woman
deals with the stress in her life in this contemporary Russian social comedy reminiscent
of Chekhov. Living with her extended family in a crowded flat, Nina (played by the great
Irina Churikova) must care for her mute, disabled (but opportunistic) Grandma and her own
two daughters. She also tries to cope with her crazed ex-husband and to put a little love
into her life, with devastating and hilarious results. A warm, wry comedy. Irina
Churikova won the Nika award for Best Actress (1991) for her performance as
Nina. Russian with English subtitles. Color. 77
minutes.
