legend is that The Saragossa Manuscript, the most famous work of
Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815), scholar, traveler, soldier and poet, was
written as a series of stories during the long illness of the author's
wife, whom he tried to amuse. This masterpiece of composition was
written in French and published in France in 1813. It ranks as one
of the most interesting literary works of the European
enlightenment. Also the film based on that famous novel became an
international hit, considered by many film critics to be one of the most
important films in postwar cinema. This romantic, fantastic
and witty tale chronicles the adventures of a Walloon guard under the King of Spain. Something of a Don Juan, this colorful 19th-century character must pass numerous tests to
prove his courage, honesty and honor in order to become a member of the powerful Mauretanian family. Starring Zbigniew Cybulski, Iga Cembrzynska,
