"The Saragossa Manuscript"
1965
Directed by Wojciech J. Has

The legend is that The Saragossa Manuscript, the most famous work of Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815), scholar, traveler, soldier and poet, was written as a series of stories during the long illness of the author's wife, whom he tried to amuse. This masterpiece of composition was written in French and published in France in 1813. It ranks as one of the most interesting literary works of the European enlightenment. Also the film based on that famous novel became an international hit, considered by many film critics to be one of the most important films in postwar cinema. This romantic, fantastic and witty tale chronicles the adventures of a Walloon guard under the King of Spain. Something of a Don Juan, this colorful 19th-century character must pass numerous tests to prove his courage, honesty and honor in order to become a member of the powerful Mauretanian family.  Starring Zbigniew Cybulski, Iga Cembrzynska, Joanna Jedryka, and Kazimierz Opalinski. Polish with English subtitles. Black and white.  174 minutes.
