"Left Luggage"
1998
Directed by Jeroen Krabbe
Jeroen Krabbe made his directorial debut with this
sensitive drama about a young woman awakening to the full significance of
her Jewish heritage. Although she is the daughter of Holocaust survivors
(Maximilian Schell and Marianne Sagebrecht), the 20-year-old student is
dismissive, even disdainful of that heritage until she takes a job as a
nanny with an ultra-Orthodox couple (Krabbe and Isabella Rossellini). "Most
films about Hasidic life are filled with caricatures of a pitilessly
hidebound people. This more nuanced view is appreciated" (Leslie Camhi,
The Village Voice). 100 minutes. |
