A Dickensian tale of passion,  obsessiveness and a life-long struggle between father and son. When the city's most hated court bailiff is found murdered, the young lawyer who last saw him alive tells police of a lifelong struggle between a father and his illegitimate son. Distinguished by a great performance by Jan Decleir, the visually stark and beautiful film is "given a quiet ferocity by Decleir's formidable performance…and has a tough-love dimension that is not so very surprising" (Janet Maslin, New York Times). Winner, Best Foreign Language Film, Academy Awards. Dutch with English subtitles. Color.  114 minutes.
