"Untold Scandal"
2003
Directed by Lee Je-Yong
The
18th century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses has provided
material for a number of skilled filmmakers, but this adaptation by Korean
auteur Lee Je-Yong is arguably the most boldly reimagined version yet. Set
in Korea at the end of the Chosun Dynasty, the film stars Bae Yong-Jun as a
handsome young aristocrat who becomes obsessed with a graceful and aloof
beauty. His mission is deterred by his spiteful cousin, who coerces him into
deflowering an innocent young woman before she can become her husband's
concubine. "Director Lee Je-Yong gives the book a makeover full of wit and
startling beauty" (LA Weekly). Japanese with English subtitles.
