Toshiro Mifune is cast as the aging head of a Tokyo family who is terrified by the prospect of a nuclear war. The industrialist's large family includes a wife, grandchildren and mistresses, and they bicker greedily over the estate as they bring mental incompetence proceedings against the patriarch. Kurosawa transforms this situation into a powerful humanist statement as I Live in Fear projects the end of mankind as a result of man's inhumanity to man.
