The story of Kaji,
a pacifist who harbors socialist leanings, who gets married and then
accepts a job as a superintendant at a mining labor camp in Manchuria to
avoid being drafted. Quickly, Kaji finds out that his ideas for a less
severe disciplinary treatment of the laborers is not well liked by either
the Japanese or by Chinese prisoners of war, who are distrustful of Kaji's
motives. More trouble occurs for him as the Chinese keep escaping and he
is suspected of helping them. Featuring Tatsuya Nakadai and Michiyo
