A beautiful film, set in 18th century Japan. The handsome but overly ambitious Gonza is one of the Matsue clan's most talented lancers. Although he is already engaged to the sister of one of his fellow retainers, Gonza agrees to wed the daughter of his lord to better his position. The fiance's infuriated brother plots against Gonza. This classic tale of conflicts between love and honor, duty and devotion, won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Japanese with English subtitles.
