Bertolucci's third feature film is a beautiful, funny adventure that uses sound, silence, music, color and an extremely literary frame of reference to create a two-hour sense of the impression of what it's like to be a romantic in today's world. The screenplay by Bertolucci and Gianni Amico is very freely inspired by Dostoevsky's short novel, The Double, about an ineffectual young man who is taken over--and ultimately driven to madness--by his alter ego, who can do all the things he cannot.
