"The Icicle Thief"
1989
Directed by Maurizio Nichetti
Maurizio Nichetti
presents an energetic send-up of the 1949 Italian neo-realist masterpiece The Bicycle
Thief while, at the same time, spoofing the ridiculousness of contemporary television
commercials. The writer-director takes on a double acting role as a frustrated filmmaker
and a fictional glass factory worker who steals a chandelier for his wife. Complications
arise when the boundaries between the two stories collide. With Caterina Sylos Labini,
Claudio G. Fava and Heidi Komarek. "This hilarious comedy is everything The Purple
Rose of Cairo should have been and more" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader).
Italian with English subtitles.
93 minutes.
