"Checkpoint"
2003
Directed by Yoav Shamir
Three million
Palestinians live in the occupied territories of the West Bank and the
Gaza Strip. Scattered throughout the region are dozens of checkpoints
where Israeli soldiers detain Palestinians trying to get home, visit
relatives, or receive medical treatment. Filming at key roadblocks in all
corners of Israel between 2001 and 2003, director-cameraman Yoav Shamir
offers a rigorous indictment of his country's siege mentality. Through
judiciously balanced interviews and provocative footage, Shamir reveals
the destructive impact that occupation is having on Palestinians and
Israelis alike. "Of all Israeli films on this subject, this is the most
unbiased and honest and also one of the most valuable." (Michael
Wilmington, Chicago Tribune). English, Hebrew, and Arabic with
English subtitles.
