"Bonjour, Monsieur
Shlomi"
2004
Directed by Shemi Zarhin
Oshri Cohen plays a
17-year-old Israeli boy who's too busy caring for his needy family to
realize his academic talents in this cheerful and inspiring coming-of-age
comedy. Shlomi's (Cohen) day is full of chores - he cares for his aging
grandfather, cooks the family meals, watches after his younger brother,
and keeps the house tidy for his hardworking mother. Schoolwork takes a
back seat until the day that Shlomi's math teacher (Nisso Khavia) tells
the boy's family of his prodigious gift - an announcement they greet with
more worry than celebration. "A feel-good movie about an unassuming teen
and the machinations necessary to reveal his hidden genius" (Ruth Stein,
San Francisco Chronicle).
