"Beaufort"
2007
Directed by Joseph Cedar
Nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2008,
this Israeli war movie tells the jarring tale of an Israeli Defense Force
unit isolated in Southern Lebanon at the mountaintop Beaufort castle. The
film begins in 2000, eighteen years after Israeli forces expelled
Palestinians from the fortress. Having endured nearly endless attacks, the
men receive orders to evacuate and destroy the outpost, leaving the
commander (Oshri Cohen) and his men to contemplate the years of bloodshed
that stain a now pointless mission. "A haunting antiwar movie" (Isabel
Kershner, The New York Times). Hebrew with optional English
subtitles. 126
minutes. |
