"Snowman"
1995
Directed by Davoud Mirbagheri
A hotly
debated comedy from Iran, Snowman (Adam Barfi) tells the story
of young Abbas (Akbar Abdi), a man desperate to immigrate to America. He's
so anxious that he dresses as a woman in hopes of marrying an American man
so he can become a full citizen. But how long can he go before being
discovered? Davoud Mirbagheri's ticklish tale of cross-dressing taps into a
common motif in Iranian culture - a character in a difficult situation must
pass as a member of the opposite sex in order to get out of trouble. Despite
the familiar theme, this bubbly comedy was quite controversial when released
in Iran. Farsi with English subtitles. 96 minutes. |
