"Travellers and Magicians"
Directed by Khyentse Norbu
Filmmaker and Himalayan Buddhist lama Khyentse Norbu
earned critical comparisons to Satyajit Ray and Zhang Yimou with this
unusually beautiful film--the first ever made in the kingdom of Bhutan. The
story follows an isolated rural villager named Dondup (Tshewang Dendup) who
dreams of emigrating to America. As he sets out to procure a visa, the young
man encounters knowing elders who help guide him towards an understanding of
his place in the world. "A warm, embracing film of transcendent beauty and
spirituality" (Los Angeles Times). In Dzongkha with English
subtitles. Bhutan. 108 minutes.
