Deepa Mehta's second film in her elements trilogy (following the controversial Fire) is set during the 1947 partition of India and follows a young girl, her family, and their neighbors as they struggle to remain neutral when civil war explodes. A romantic rivalry and other matters of daily life are eventually engulfed in the violent conflicts between Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. The film builds in intensity until reaching a powerful, unforgettable conclusion.
