"The Clay Bird"
2002
Directed by
Tareque Masud

Set in Pakistan during the turbulent 1960s, this semi-autobiographical triumph from director Tareque Masud won the International Critics Prize at Cannes and has been compared to the cinema of Satyajit Ray. A shy boy from rural East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) is sent away to an ultra-orthodox Madrasah school. Taken from his friends, family, and the vibrant Hindu festivities of his hometown, he is pulled into a showdown between moderate and extremist forces at his school. Bengali with English subtitles.  98 minutes.
