"The Filth and the Fury: A Sex
Pistol Film"
2000
Directed by Julien Temple
Pure punk
rockers and pure marketing hype, The Sex Pistols were always a band defined
by their contradictions and conflicts. Having given manager and
self-promoter extraordinaire Malcolm McLaren his say in The Great Rock 'n
Roll Swindle, twenty years later director Julien Temple tells the
Pistols' story from the band's point of view. All the members share their
thoughts on the 2-year whirlwind that was the band's controversial career,
but of course it is outspoken singer John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten), who
provides the most amusingly cynical quotes. Like The Great Rock 'n Roll
Swindle, this film is a sort of pop collage, cutting rapidly from
contemporary interviews to performance clips to rarely seen archival
material, including the sad yet hilarious sight of a drugged-out Sid Vicious
unable to stay awake during an interview. Includes clips from the aborted
feature, Who Killed Bambi?, directed by Russ Meyer and written by
Roger Ebert. 103 minutes. |
