"The Lady and the Duke"
Directed by Eric Rohmer
drama based on Grace Elliott's journals of her life in Paris during the
French Revolution, this film depicts the violence of warfare and political
upheaval against the story of Elliott's relationship with Prince Philippe,
the Duke of Orleans. Known for his realism and natural lighting, Rohmer
creates the past entirely in the studio. In one of his rare period pieces,
he boldly uses paintings and other historical illustrations as the backdrop
his actors walk through. "The movie's look is authentic, but--as suits an
epoch that predates photography--in no way naturalistic...Rohmer has
contrived a glorious Melies effect..." (J. Hoberman, Village Voice).
French with English subtitles. 129 minutes.
