"J'Accuse"
1918
Directed by Abel Gance
Gance's first, silent
version of his anti-war story of a young peasant woman, her husband, and the
poet who loves her. The two men go to war. While they are gone, the woman is
raped by a German soldier and becomes pregnant. When her husband returns he
accuses the poet. When the two men discover the truth, they return to the
trenches to avenge her. Silent with original French titles, optional English
subtitles, and new symphonic score by Robert Israel.
166 minutes.
