"The Italian Straw Hat"
1927
Directed by Rene Clair
Pauline Kael called The
Italian Straw Hat "one of the funniest films ever made and one of the most
elegant as well." Based on an immensely popular farce by Eugene Labiche, the plot is
a breezy tale about a bridegroom whose horse has a taste for ladies' hats. Rene Clair
substituted sight gags for the clever word play, directed the action at a breakneck pace,
and "screwball comedy" was born. This version is transferred from the restored
negative, with a newly added musical score by Raymond Alessandrini. Starring Albert
Prejean. Silent.
84 minutes. |
