Essential Art House collection, released to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of Janus Films in 2006. Well, the art cinema lover in you need
not worry. Janus and Criterion have conspired to rerelease these films in
individual and scaled-down, multi-volume editions. Volume four includes
another six inarguable masterpieces: Gervaise (Rene Clement,
France, 1956, 117 minutes); Le Jour Se Leve (Marcel Carne, France,
1939, 90 minutes); Mayerling (Anatole Litvak, France, 1936, 93
minutes); The Tales of Hoffmann (Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger,
Great Britain, 1951, 124 minutes); The 39 Steps (Alfred Hitchcock,
Great Britain, 1935, 90 minutes); and Throne of Blood (Akira
Kurosawa, Japan, 1957, 109 minutes). In French, English, and Japanese with
English subtitles.
