"Gertrud"
1964
Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer
Carl Dreyer's last film,
adapted from an early 20th century Scandinavian play, is a profound
tale of a life crippled by an inability to compromise. Gertrud leaves her
husband and scorns a former lover, Gabriel to pursue a young musician,
Gustav, who fails to live up to her image of him. She ends her marriage to
him and takes a lover, the composer Erland Jansson. When he also fails to
live up to her standards, she leaves him. "...deserves to be ranked
along with The Magnificent Ambersons, Lola Montes and The
Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as one of the great haunted-memory
films" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). Danish with
English subtitles.
119 minutes. |
