"A Time to Live and a Time to Die"
1985
Directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien

Hsiao-hsien's vivid depiction of childhood and adolescence, inspired by his own youth, dramatizes the growing generation gap between family members out of touch with their cultural heritage. The story follows a family from southern mainland China who migrate to Taiwan to escape from financial hardship and later find themselves unable to return. "One of the great Chinese language films. The scenes are so lucid they stay in our minds like actual memories" (Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune). Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Taiwanese with English subtitles. Taiwan. 137 minutes.
