"So Close to Paradise"
Directed by Wang Xiaoshuai
not nearly as controversial as his 1998 feature, Frozen, Wang
Xiaoshuai's So Close to Paradise was still held up for several
years and re-edited by Chinese censors, wary of the impact of its bleak
portrait of urban corruption. It tells the story of two friends who find
their lives at the crossroads when they move to the city. As one becomes
involved in the criminal underworld, he pulls his friend into a fatal
scheme. "...a film that is wise, fatalistic and romantic in just the right
proportions--in the best noir tradition" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles
Times). In Mandarin with English subtitles.
