"Hou Hsiao-Hsien: Director's Limited
Edition Collection"
1983-1986
Directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Influential Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien is
known for his finely textured human dramas that deal with family
relationships and address questions of personal and national identity
against the backdrop of his native island's turbulent history. This
exclusive boxed set collects four of Hsiao-Hsien's films, including The
Boys from Fengkuei (1983, 98 mins.), an engaging story about three men
from a small island off of Taiwan's coast who move to the mainland for work
and excitement; A Summer at Grandpa's (1984, 102 mins.) tells the
story of a brother and sister who spend the summer with their grandparents
in the country after their mother falls ill; A Time to Live and a Time to
Die (1985, 137 mins.) follows a family from southern mainland China who
migrate to Taiwan to escape financial hardship and later find themselves
unable to return; and Dust in the Wind (1986, 109 mins.) tells the
heartbreaking story of a teenaged couple forced to leave school and find
work in the city. Mandarin and Taiwanese with English subtitles. 446 minutes. |
