"S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing
Machine"
2002
Directed by Rithy Panh
The true story behind The Killing Fields, this
grim documentary by Rithy Panh takes an unrelenting peek at a brutal moment
in history: the period between 1975-1979 when almost two million Cambodians
lost their lives to murder and famine at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
Focused primarily on the S21 detention center where only 7 of approximately
17,000 survived, Panh interviews two survivors and many of the guards and
interrogators who committed horrible acts of brutality and torture. A
chilling inquiry into ideological brainwashing and human evil, Panh's film
is "cinema at its most intellectually honest and morally necessary" (Washington
Post). Khmer with English subtitles. 101 minutes.
