Jose Wilker stars as the "Gypsy Lord" of a traveling
tent show that winds its way through the backroads of Brazil,
playing to tiny villages
along the edge of the ever-shrinking jungle. A star-struck young accordionist is
enamored by the troupe, and he and his pregnant young wife join them, jostling around in
the back of the truck. We see a way of life that is rapidly disappearing as
development encroaches. With the arrival of electricity and television to the
villages, the troupe finds that the audiences are no longer lining up to see the seductive
"Solome, Queen of the Rhumba"(Betty Faria). They arrive in one such
village to find the streets deserted and the entire population gathered around one
television.
The location footage is fascinating. The characters and
their relationships with each other add an additional dynamic to this already powerful
film. We consider this to be one of the most important South American films we've
seen.
Color, Portuguese with English subtitles.
