Directed by Jochen Hick
complex film about gay desire and paranoia. A former German steward travels
to Rio to find a mysterious man who left a cryptic message, "Welcome to the
AIDS Club," following a sexual encounter. "Via Appia, the nickname of a Rio
district where male prostitutes hang out, becomes a grim guided tour of the
city's gay subculture, its bars, discos, streets and a beach known as the
AIDS farm. The documentary-within-the film-format justifies this material"
(Vincent Canby). With Peter Senner, Guilherme de Padua and Yves Jansen.
German and Spanish with English subtitles. 90 minutes.
