"Orfeu"
1999
Directed by Carlo Diegues
The
Greek myth of Orpheus and his love for the nymph Eurydice is brought to the
screen with intoxicating results in this lush, vibrant feature. Like Marcel
Camus' 1959 classic, Black Orpheus, this film transposes the legend
to Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval, but the portrayal of the event and the
myth is notably different than the earlier film, reflecting an entirely
different era and sensibility. "An original and intoxicating creation"
(Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Featuring the music of Caetano
Veloso. Portuguese with English subtitles. 112 minutes. |
