This psycho-sexual gothic thriller from Brazil's horror auteur Jose Mojica Marins represents the debut appearance of the evil protagonist Coffin Joe (played by the director). He's a grave digger who torments the residents of a small town. Coffin Joe is looking for a woman who will bear his child and preserve his reign of terror. Marins' style blends genuine surrealism with eerie classic horror elements and scenes of pure (sometimes rather sadistic) exploitation. Several Coffin Joe sequels followed. Portuguese with English subtitles. 81 minutes.
