The classic Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydices is retold
against the
background of 1950's Rio de Janeiro in this award-winning film that has proven
the test of time. Even if only from an historical perspective, this film will
mesmerize you as you visit 1950's Rio, but far more than that, the tragic tale told holds
your interest, the characters evoke compassion and the costumes are beautiful to look
at. The fantastic color cinematography captures Carnival in all its glory.
Many scenes appear to be actual unstaged events; a visit to a voodoo temple and, of course
the street dancing of Carnival.
Black Orpheus won an Oscar from the Academy Awards for
Best Foreign Language Film of 1960, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
Marcel Camus won the Golden Palm from Cannes Film Festival in 1959.
