Romy Schneider became a star while still in her teens thanks largely to the Sissi films,  a trio of confectionary features made between 1955 and 1957 about the Austrian-Hungarian royal family. Portions of all three films were edited together for this 1962 epic, which follows the romantic hurdles faced by Franz Josef, the young Emperor of Austria, and his beloved Sissi (Schneider), the sister of a Bavarian princess.
