"Nijinsky: The Diaries of Vaslav
Nijinsky"
2001
Directed by Paul Cox
Taking an impressionistic
approach to the legendary dancer, this film uses Nijinsky's actual diary
entries as narration (read by Derek Jacobi) to accompany images of nature's
beauty, some dramatic re-creations, and expertly choreographed performances
of some of his most famous dances. Through his structuring of these words
and images, Cox tries to symbolically convey both Nijinsky's brilliance and
madness. "I've never seen or heard anything quite like this film, and I
recommend it for its originality alone" (Andrew Sarris, New York Observer).
95 minutes.
